Midjourney V8.1 is the most significant upgrade the platform has seen in years.
V8.1 released on midjourney.com on April 30, 2026 and became the default version on June 10, 2026. If you have been using Midjourney for a while you are already on V8.1 unless you have manually set a different version. If you are new to Midjourney this is the version you will be using from day one.
This guide covers every meaningful change in V8 and V8.1 - what is new, what changed, and exactly how to use each new feature for brand photography and content creation.
What changed from V7 to V8
The jump from V7 to V8 was significant across four areas.
V8 delivers 5x faster generation, native 2K resolution, dramatically improved text rendering, and better prompt understanding - all while maintaining backward compatibility with your existing V7 styles and moodboards.
Each of these changes matters differently depending on how you use Midjourney. Here is the practical breakdown of each one.
Speed
What used to take 30 to 60 seconds now completes in under 10 seconds. For brand creators who run dozens of prompt iterations per session this is the most immediately noticeable change. The faster feedback loop means you can iterate more in the same time and refine toward your target aesthetic much faster.
V8.1's generation time drops from 30-60 seconds on V7 to under 10 seconds.
Native 2K resolution with --hd
V8.1 features HD images, allowing you to generate higher resolution 2K images without upscaling. Add --hd to any prompt and the image generates natively at 2K resolution rather than upscaling from a lower resolution. The practical difference: finer material detail, sharper edges on product labels, more accurate texture rendering on surfaces like marble, linen, and leather.
For brand photography this matters most for product shots where label legibility and material accuracy are important.
Adding --hd generates natively at 2K resolution with sharper material and texture detail instead of upscaling.
Text rendering
Text in AI-generated images has been a pain point across every model. V8 makes a major leap forward. When you put text in quotation marks within your prompt, V8 renders it with significantly improved accuracy - readable street signs, clean product labels, legible typography in posters and book covers.
How to use it: put any text you want to appear in the image inside quotation marks within your prompt.
Example
'A minimal product label on a glass bottle with the text "LUMINOS" in clean sans-serif typography'
The result is not perfect - complex fonts and small text still have accuracy issues - but it is a meaningful improvement over V7 and makes certain content types newly viable in Midjourney.
V8's text rendering produces significantly cleaner, more legible product labels and typography than V7.
Prompt understanding
V8 follows complex multi-element prompts more accurately than V7. Detailed 6-layer prompts that previously produced partial results now land closer to the full description. This is particularly useful for brand photography where you need specific surfaces, lighting directions, and compositional rules all applied simultaneously.
What V8.1 adds on top of V8
V8.1 ships four additions on top of V8 - HD Images is the headline feature.
V8.1 shipped on April 30, 2026 with four additions to the V8 foundation.
V8.1 ships three workflow tools. None of them reinvents how you prompt, but each removes friction from a task that practitioners do constantly.
1. HD images (--hd parameter)
Already covered above - native 2K generation without upscaling. This is the headline feature of V8.1 and the one most users notice immediately.
2. Restored Image Prompts
Image prompts - using an image URL as a reference in your prompt - were updated in V8.1 with improved consistency. When you use an image reference the model holds the subject identity and aesthetic qualities more reliably across generations. This is directly useful for the Midjourney Omni Reference workflow for product photography.
3. Prompt Shortener
The Prompt Shortener is the one most likely to change a daily habit. Many practitioners build up sprawling prompts over an editing session, and the long tail of descriptors stops earning its keep. Shortening the prompt makes results more reproducible and easier to reason about.
Access it through the Midjourney web interface. Paste your long prompt and the shortener removes redundant or low-impact descriptors while keeping the elements that most influence the output. Useful for identifying which parts of your prompt are actually doing work.
4. Updated Describe tool
The updated Describe tool is useful when you have a reference image and want a starting point in Midjourney's own prompt vocabulary rather than guessing at it.
Upload any image and Describe generates a prompt that would produce a similar result. For brand creators this is useful for reverse-engineering the prompt language behind reference images that match your target aesthetic.
How to activate V8.1
V8.1 is the default version as of June 10, 2026. You do not need to do anything to activate it - it is already what you are using.
To explicitly specify V8.1 in any prompt add --v 8.1 at the end:
'Product still life of a ceramic vessel on marble surface, soft window light --ar 4:5 --v 8.1 --stylize 150'
One important note: you may need to unlock your Global V7/V8 Personalization Profile to use V8.1. If your personalization profile was built on V7 go to your Midjourney settings and enable the Global Personalization Profile to make sure it applies to V8.1 generations.
A V8.1 prompt with its key parameters called out - --v 8.1 sets the model, --hd generates at native 2K.
V8.1 parameters - what is new and what changed
Most V7 parameters carry over to V8.1 unchanged. Here are the ones worth knowing specifically for V8.1:
--hd
New in V8. Generates at native 2K resolution. Adds generation time but produces higher quality output for product shots and detail imagery. Use for hero shots and anything where material texture matters.
--v 8.1
Explicitly sets the model to V8.1. Not required since it is default but useful to include in saved prompt templates to ensure consistency if Midjourney releases future versions.
--raw
Removes V8.1's default aesthetic filter. V8.1 applies its own sense of visual polish by default. Adding --raw produces more literal prompt interpretation with less stylistic enhancement. Use when you want photographic realism without Midjourney's aesthetic overlay.
--stylize
Works the same as V7. Range 0 to 1000. Default 100. Higher values add more creative interpretation. For brand photography 100 to 250 is the practical range.
--p (personalization)
Works with V8.1 if your Global Personalization Profile is unlocked. Your trained aesthetic preferences apply to V8.1 generations the same way they did in V7.
--ar (aspect ratio)
Unchanged. --ar 4:5 for Instagram, --ar 1:1 for Amazon, --ar 2:3 for Pinterest, --ar 16:9 for website banners.
The six V8.1 parameters worth knowing - --hd and --v 8.1 are the two new or version-specific ones.
Practical changes for brand photography
Here is how V8.1 specifically changes the workflow for brand creators:
Product label accuracy: use text in quotation marks in your prompt for more accurate label rendering. Still not perfect but viable for simple wordmarks and product names.
Material detail: use --hd for product shots where surface texture matters. Marble veining, fabric weave, ceramic glaze, and leather grain all render with more detail at 2K.
Prompt efficiency: use the Prompt Shortener after building a long prompt through iteration. It helps identify which descriptors are carrying weight and which are redundant.
Personalization: if you built a personalization profile in V7 unlock the Global Profile in settings to carry it forward to V8.1 generations.
Speed: take advantage of the faster generation speed to run more iterations. The V8.1 speed improvement means you can explore more creative directions in the same session time.
V8.1 vs V7 - should you switch?
If you are currently using V7 with a settled workflow the question is whether V8.1 improves results enough to justify re-calibrating your prompt templates.
The honest answer: yes for most brand creators. The speed improvement alone justifies the switch. The --hd parameter adds real value for product photography. And the improved prompt adherence means your 6-layer prompts land more accurately.
The one reason to stay on V7: if you have a highly calibrated personalization profile and prompt template system built specifically for V7's aesthetic. In that case test V8.1 with your existing templates before fully committing. Results will be similar but not identical.
V8.1 rates higher than V7 across speed, resolution, text accuracy, and prompt adherence.
Build V8.1 optimized prompts
The fastest way to apply V8.1's new capabilities to your brand photography is to build prompts that specifically use --hd for product shots, --v 8.1 to ensure version consistency, and --raw when you want photographic realism.
Our free Midjourney Prompt Builder assembles all 6 layers with live preview and automatically includes --v 8.1 in the parameters. Use it to build your first V8.1 brand prompt.
Already have prompts from V7 that you want to update for V8.1? The Prompt Fixer diagnoses what is weak in any existing prompt and rewrites it with V8.1 optimizations built in.
Midjourney V8.1 is the current default version of Midjourney, released April 30, 2026 and made the default model on June 10, 2026. It builds on V8 with native 2K HD image generation via the --hd parameter, restored image prompts, a Prompt Shortener tool, and an updated Describe tool. It is 4 to 5 times faster than previous versions.
Add --hd at the end of any prompt to generate a native 2K resolution image. Example: 'Product still life on marble surface, soft window light --ar 4:5 --v 8.1 --stylize 150 --hd'. Note that --hd adds slightly more generation time but produces significantly higher quality output for detail-heavy content.
Midjourney V8 introduced four major improvements over V7: 5x faster generation speed, native 2K resolution via --hd, significantly improved text rendering when text is placed in quotation marks in the prompt, and better prompt understanding for complex multi-element descriptions.
The Prompt Shortener is available through the Midjourney web interface at midjourney.com. Paste your prompt into the shortener tool and it removes redundant or low-impact descriptors while keeping the elements that most influence the output. It helps identify which parts of your prompt are doing the most work.
No. Midjourney V8.1 is included in all existing Midjourney subscription plans at no extra cost. Basic starts at $10/month, Standard at $30/month, Pro at $60/month, and Mega at $120/month. The --hd parameter for 2K images is available on all plans.
Yes for most brand creators. The speed improvement alone justifies the switch. The --hd parameter adds real value for product photography material detail. If you have a highly calibrated V7 personalization profile test V8.1 with your existing templates before fully committing as results will be similar but not identical.
